For opponents of the Lawrence school district’s plans to build athletic fields at Lawrence High School, city planners’ interpretation of the land development code means that the project, should it receive the go-ahead from the school board tonight, results in a dangerous, and perhaps illegal, situation.

Anna Stubblefield, who began serving as Central Junior High School’s principal in August, has met the challenges of being a principal head-on. The Kansas City, Mo., native and Kansas University graduate says her colleagues and students have made for an easy transition from her last position, where she was an assistant principal in the Blue Valley School District.

“Do you know where you are?” “Wetlands!” Science lessons got interactive Friday for a group of Lawrence second-graders. This fall, students from Lawrence schools are traveling to Baker Wetlands to learn about environmental cycles. The trips are a part of Learning About the Environment Through the Arts, a program designed to provide ecology and arts experiences.

The 17th annual Heart of America Marching Festival will bring 14 high school bands to Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium today. Bands from Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska will compete in a preliminary round beginning at 1 p.m., then class championship exhibitions and the finals begin at 6:30 p.m.

When a school’s state assessment score goes up, that’s cause for alarm, said Alfie Kohn, a former teacher, author and highly vocal opponent of the No Child Left Behind Act, during a community lecture Thursday night. A response he’d like to hear from more parents is, “What did they have to sacrifice from my child’s education to increase scores?” Kohn said.
Grant to fund school’s safe room

Eudora elementary school students and teachers should be a little safer, thanks to a $566,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help construct a tornado safe room at their new school. The safe room also will serve as a cafeteria and commons room and will open when the new school does next fall.
