‘Nick & Norah’ a modest romantic gem

***

Michael Cera and Kat Dennings have a lively, easy chemistry as a couple of high school seniors prowling the streets of New York on an all-night quest to find their favorite underground band. The comedy is a worthy successor to those 1980s John Hughes movies that were sweetly romantic without trying hard to be.

Audiences make ’Chihuahua’ top dog with $29M weekend
October 6, 2008
“Beverly Hills Chihuahua” was barking up the right tree with movie-goers, who put the Disney comedy at No. 1 for the weekend with a $29 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday.
‘Nick & Norah’ a modest romantic gem
October 3, 2008
Someday, Michael Cera will show us what else he can do. He surely must have someone else inside of him besides the poignantly verbal but sweetly awkward nerd we’ve come to know and love in movies such as “Superbad” and “Juno” and the late, great TV series “Arrested Development.”
‘Eagle Eye’ soars to No. 1
September 29, 2008
Shia LaBeouf’s conspiracy thriller “Eagle Eye” debuted at the top of the weekend box office with $29.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Paramount-DreamWorks release was the second No. 1 premiere for LaBeouf and director D.J. Caruso, who also teamed on 2007’s hit “Disturbia.”
Paul Newman, Hollywood’s cool anti-hero, dies
September 28, 2008
Paul Newman never much cared for what he once called the “rubbish” of Hollywood, choosing to live in a quiet community on the opposite corner of the U.S. map, staying with his wife of many years and — long after he became bored with acting — pursuing his dual passions of philanthropy and race cars.
Spike Lee’s ‘Miracle’ an ambitious misfire
September 26, 2008
Poor Spike Lee. You just knew, the moment he lashed out at Clint Eastwood for leaving black soldiers out of his two-part Iwo Jima epic, that he had really put his foot in it.
‘Lakeview’ furnishes simmering tension
September 19, 2008
Aside from sapphire swimming pools, there is no water in sight of Lakeview Terrace, a tidy cul-de-sac development in suburban L.A. Instead, just beyond the drop-off, there are canyons of tinder-dry scrub and distant, growing wildfires. Even before the story begins, a pall of menace hangs over the cliffside community.
Outside the law: KU alum filmmaker and Lawrence actor collaborate on ‘Lakeview Terrace’
September 18, 2008
For the first time in the 11 years since he became an internationally renowned filmmaker, Neil LaBute is on the brink of an elusive, unlikely achievement. The Kansas University graduate has already solidified his reputation as a master of crafting controversial tales involving revenge, betrayal and cruelty. But nothing has quite prepared him for the expectations of how his latest project, “Lakeview Terrace,” will be received.
‘Burn After Reading’ rakes in $19M
September 15, 2008
Joel and Ethan Coen scored their biggest opener to date by raking in $19.4 million in ticket sales for “Burn After Reading” and helping end a seven-week attendance slide at theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Willmott to recommend must-see political films
September 15, 2008
Despite the next two months set to be dominated by politics, few political films are to be found at the multiplex. So Lawrence filmmaker Kevin Willmott decided to merge politics with cinema — at least for an evening.
‘Burn After Reading’ is dark and energetic
September 12, 2008
The best movies by the Coen brothers are deadpan essays in dark comedy, with intricate plots and memorable character performances. Those traits apply to their worst films as well, devilishly dry character studies that can seem like an inside joke between two closer-than-close siblings.
’Bangkok Dangerous’ reaches No. 1
September 8, 2008
The Nicolas Cage action-thriller “Bangkok Dangerous” needed just $7.8 million to take the top spot at the box office in what was the slowest movie weekend in at least five years, according to estimates released Sunday.
Niccum: Success of summer movies can’t be measured by sites
September 5, 2008
Back in 1995 when I was writing a film column for an alt-weekly publication, I started getting pestered by people about the movie ads we were running. These folks would call (not e-mail) to ask if I knew what those strange markings meant that began with “www” and were stripped along the bottom of the ad.
‘Thunder’ rolls in $14.3M
September 2, 2008
“Tropic Thunder” hauled in $14.3 million to stay on top of the box office as Hollywood’s solid summer wound down sleepily, with Hurricane Gustav contributing to a slow Labor Day weekend at theaters.
‘Dark Knight’ reaches $500M
September 1, 2008
Batman’s rich alter-ego Bruce Wayne has added half a billion dollars to his riches.
The best and worst of summer films
August 31, 2008
What a glorious summer of cinema it was, with “The Dark Knight” reminding us why we miss Heath Ledger, ABBA fans coming out of the closet and out of the woodwork for “Mamma Mia!,” “Kung Fu Panda” and “WALL-E” keeping the kiddies entertained and an August so littered with funny, raunchy movies the nation’s frat houses threatened to empty out altogether.
