- As fuel prices rise, highway deaths fall

- Chris Bortz would like to remind everyone that there’s a bright side to those spiraling gasoline prices that have been draining our wallets this year. More people are driving safely on Kansas roads. That’s because the latest price acceleration — including the record push past $4 per gallon over the summer — has spurred people to drive fewer miles, and at lower speeds, said Bortz, assistant chief for the state’s Bureau of Traffic Safety.

But County Clerk Jamie Shew says the changes are not drastic and are necessary to help voters better read and understand the ballot. “People find this far easier to read, clear to read, easier to use,” Shew said. “It doesn’t change. - Kansans appear ready to put the brakes on a proposal to lower the state speed limit from 70 mph to 65 mph. By more than a 5-to-1 margin, Kansas residents oppose the move, according to the dozens of comments received so far by the Kansas Energy Council. Lawrence’s Stanley Rasmussen’s reasoning against the proposal is typical of many.

Actually, they were being chucked into a pond at Lawrence Landscape, one of the 15 farm stops for people on the fourth annual Kaw Valley Farm Tour, which continues today. “It’s hilarious,” said Pamela Brown, of Topeka.

- The 17th annual Heart of America Marching Festival will bring 14 high school bands to Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium today. Bands from Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska will compete in a preliminary round beginning at 1 p.m., then class championship exhibitions and the finals begin at 6:30 p.m.

- University endowment funds are not exempt from the effects of a sagging economy. Endowments at both Kansas University and Baker University reported slowdowns in donor giving and smaller overall available funds. Leaders at both universities said they anticipated being able to weather the downturn and look forward to better economic times.

- Lawrence’s House representatives were split on the issue again. U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, D-Topeka, whose district includes west Lawrence, voted against the bailout proposal that failed Monday and against the one that was approved Friday by the full House. U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Lenexa, whose district includes east Lawrence, voted for both proposals.
